Confederate soldier Harold Cleaver blacks out during a cavalry attack and comes to his senses miles from the battle. He knows he would be classed as a deserter, so has no choice but to head West. Witness to a massacre by a gang of outlaws, he does his best to stay out of trouble. As he settles into Laporte, Colorado though, he finds he cannot escape his past. His choice is to die or to learn how to use a gun. The sheriff wants him out of town; the outlaws want him dead.
